How do I REALLY turn off the page file?

J

Jeff Johnson

My C: partition is only 2GB in size. I like it this way. I always run
everything from ANY partition other than C:. This is causing me one problem,
however: I cannot get Windows to NOT create a pagefile.sys file on this
drive.

I went into the dialog to manage paging files and chose the No paging file
option for drive C:. At this moment, the dialog indicates that there is no
paging file on this drive, yet there is a 1.35GB pagefile.sys on C: that I
can't delete because it's in use. AAARRRRGGGGHHH!!!

I'm not interested in "tell Windows to create a very small page file on this
drive" advice; I want to know how to tell Windows to TURN IT OFF COMPLETELY.
Is it possible, or is this a bug?

For reference, XP MCE 2005, SP2.

Hi Jeff:

You can't fight City Hall, and you can't force Windows to work in a way
it was not designed to work.

Windows creates a page file because that's how it was designed and
that's what software expects.

Hack away and have a good time...in the long run I think you'll find it
best to run all your software in the manner supported by the authors.

How much ram memory do you have installed.
If you can install 1 gb, your paging file will probably be idle.

Do you want to turn it off completely or just on drive C: because you
have another paging file on a different drive?

Do you have any "system security" or "internet security" type software
installed? Many of these products, especially Norton, have been
known to override changes made by the user and restore the system
default values.

Good luck

Sorry. I should have mentioned that I have a "normal" (i.e.,
system-controlled) page file on a larger partition.

Nope.

And for reference, I have 1GB of RAM.

My question for you, IS: How do you get your system to all fit on 2 GIGS?
Where are your programs? Your Documents & Settings? And if those are on
another partition, how diid you manage to convince the gremlins inside the
computer to let you do that?

it is not a good idea to remove page file from BOOT drive. set it to a min/max of 200gb.
then select a different drive and set it to system managed and click the SET button.
if you have NO page file on boot drive xp will constantly complain of missing page file.
the basic problem is your boot partition is WAY too small.

I was just thinking how wonderful life was, when "Jeff Johnson"
Is it possible, or is this a bug?

It *is* possible 'cos I have done it. I do recall that one has to
press 'set' after each change (and reboot) or the changes don't take.
