how do I read or convert an rtf doc?

I am using Word 97 and Office 2000 on an XP Dell PC.

I have a folder with 14 Word documents in it which are journals I have been
keeping.

I noticed for the first time that one of those journals is an RTF file. I
haven't a clue how it got saved that way, and can't open it to read or
change. When I click it, Word opens with a small box inside and there are
various choices to change that file. I think. In other words, I really don't
know what I'm doing. I do not want to change all the files. Just that one.
Or at least be able to open and then save as anything else but RTF. Please
Advise. Thanks.

If you have Office 2000 then you have Word 2000 and if you open it in Word
2000 you can do a FILE/SAVE AS and change the FILE TYPE to Word document.

I don't remember when Word got the RTF format but it's been awhile. Its a
standardized format the maintains formatting across applications.

When you try to open the file, what does the title of the"small box" say?
Does it say "Convert File"? If it does, it's simply asking you what format
you think that file is in. It's not actually going to change the file at
this point. It's merely asking if it's okay to use the RFT filter to read
it. In this case, accept Rich Text Format (RTF).

Once the file is open, as noted by Keven B., choose File - Save As, and set
the type to Word document.

By the way, under ordinary circumstances, you wouldn't be seeing the Convert
File dialog box because opening an RTF is very straightforward for Word.
That box appears only if a) Word is really unsure about how to handle the
file, or b) Tools - Options - General - Confirm conversion at open (or words
to that effect) is enabled. (It's not a bad idea to have that option
enabled, but given your description of it, I'm wondering how that box got
checked.)
