How do I put colour ONLY in selected rows or columns?

everytime I select a row or column I want to put a background colour in, the
whole database takes on that colour, I only want my X column or X row
coloured in! I can do this on excel, how do I do this on access??

Are you perhaps working directly in a table?
Tables in Access are intended to store data; forms (and reports) to display
it.
(Excel combines the two functions in one.)
