apparently, there is an update that was downloaded automatically to my
computer for windows defender but not installed.

i realized this when i went to windows update and it said there was an
update, but that it was 0 kb *

the asterisk means that it's already been downloaded, apparently.

anyway, it keeps failing on install and i can't figure out how to purge
it so i can attempt another download and install.

this is the update number:

KB915597

Try this:

START, RUN

Msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}

You get a prompt whether you are sure you want to delete/uninstall this
patch - answer yes.

Please just copy and paste the above in run box to avoid errors.

Reboot and try again.
