How do I play my .avi file in PowerPoint

I'm trying to insert a movie file (.avi) into my pwrpnt presentation. When I
click to play I get multicolored lines and no movie. What do I need to do to
make a movie play in PowerPoint? I've tried .mpeg and wmv and I get the same
results.
 
Hi Sandy...I tried your suggestion and it did not work, any other suggestions?
 
Sorry, that didn't work either...does the file have to be a certain size?
