how do I permanently change the default number of speakers?

Is there any way of permanently changing the default
number of speakers? I have a 5.1 setup and every time I
boot up my machine it reverts to 2 speakers. I'm using
XPpro and have a Creative SoundBlaster Audigy card. I've
contacted Creative and thay said it's a Windows XP issue
and cannot help.

Check in the Speaker Settings panel of the Creative controls and see if the
box Synchronize with Control Panel is checked. If so, uncheck it and see if
you come up OK after rebooting. If you don't see that box, you may need to
update your Soundblaster drivers.
