How do I open an Office 97 doc in Office 2007?

I found some old 3 1/2" diskettes with Microsoft Word 97 docs on it. Word
2007 will not open them. Says "You are attempting to open a document that was
created in an earlier version of Microsoft Office. This file is blocked from
opening by your registry policy setting." Then it goes on to warn me of all
the havoc I can create if I try to change this setting. Scared me! I really
want to open these docs. Ideas?

Never ever read from, write to, or print from floppy with Word. These are
the most certain methods of ensuring document corruption.

Copy to the hard disc and work on the document from there.

It sounds as though you may have already corrupted them as Word 2007 should
open Word 97 documents without problem.
