how do i make toolbars smaller?

I'm using a netbook. In all the programs the toolbars take up so much space i
can hardly see my document or webpage. How do I reduce their size?
 
Are you using many commands from all the open toolbars all the time?
One thing you could do is close the toolbars you don't use
frequentlly. Another thing would be to create a custom toolbar holding
all the commands you use from all the other toolbars, and then only
have that one open. (It would be like the Quick Access Toolbar in
Word2007.)
