How do I make text in the equation editor italicized by default?

I know that this is the normal setting but I can't figure out how to change
it back.

It's in the Style menu; click on Define. There are several styles
in the Define Styles dialog. The one that should be italic is
"Variable". Even though you said "text" in the subject line, I'm
sure this isn't really what you want. Normal text is usually not
italicized, but there's an "Italic" box next to it if you want to
check it.

click on style on EQ editor menu then define . It will open a dialog box that
you can make style changes and italic, bold,...
 
Thanks a lot guys. That works.

The interesting thing is that I realized that I was typing English letters
in the Japanese locale. Apparently, Office 2007 treats it slightly
differently although all the ASCII codes should be the same. I guess the
differences are subtle ones, like in this case.
