Are you using PowerPoint 2002/XP and above?
If so, select both the text and picture.
Click Slide Show > Custom Animation.
Click Add Effect > Entrance > Fade.
The second effect should have its start as "With Previous". If the second
effect is "On Click", set it to "With Previous".
Is that what you want?

Well I want them both to do that but I want them both to fade in at exactly
the same time and when I did what you told me the words fade in and out but
then after that's done the picture fades in and out seperate

First, are they fading in at the same speed?
Also, did you do exactly as the steps mentioned?
I can see that you are talking about fading IN and OUT.
You will need to select BOTH the text and picture before applying the effect.
If you are doing it correctly, the first two effects in the custom animation
should be fade in.

You should see something like:
Text - Fade In (On click)
Picture - Fade In (With Previous)
Text - Fade Out (On click)
Picture - Fade Out (With Previous)

What version of PowerPoint are you using? If you are not using 2002 or 2003
(but an earlier version) the steps provided by tohlz will not work. That is
why he asked. If you are using 2002 or 2003 make sure the subsequent
animations in the taskpane to the right are set to animate "With Previous".

If the text isn't in one of the placeholders, select the picture and the text,
group them, then apply the animation to the group.

If that doesn't seem to work, select both the text and the picture, choose
Edit, Copy. Then choose Edit, Paste Special and pick PNG.

That'll paste back a single picture that contains the text and picture; you'll
be able to animate them as one ... because they ARE one.
