How do I make an external drive bootable?

I have laptop/docking station with an internal drive with Win2k and an
external drive with WinXP on it. It worked fine with that laptop.
Unfortunately, I got another laptop with Win XP on it. How can I get the new
laptop to boot to the external hard drive? The end goal is to have a dual
boot system with the current laptop.
