How do I know if Im truely administrator?

G

Guest

Ive never really dealt with multiple logons before. Ive always been the
administrator in XP (Only one on the computer). Now, in Vista, I dont know
who I am. lol.

Im trying to get Diskeeper installed but near the end when its trying to
start the DkService.exe it fails saying that I dont have sufficiant
privelages or something. The readme says that you have to be logged on as
administrator to install but I dont know how to do that. When I go to switch
useres, the only choice is MyName which is allready logged on. Its where I
was trying to switch from. No other choices like administrator or anything.
Should I have more choices? Im confused about this stuff.

You are Ecat.

If you log on as Administrator, then you are Administrator. That is a
special built-in account. However, your account may be assigned
Administrators group privileges which would enable you to do most everything
the Administrator account can do.

Well I dont actually logon in the normal sense. I mean it just boots. I make
no choices. However I remembered that theres a User Accounts in CP. So I
looked in there and it had MyName (Administrator) There no other users so I
guess I am actually administrator.

I wish Diskeeper would install then. Oh well.

However, you run as a user with administrator priviledges when the system
needs those permissions to do something. You don't run as an administrator
in the same sense you did on XP.

C

Colin Barnhorst

Yes, if adminstrative permissions are needed to install or run it he would
still have to elevate with Run as Admin. Just running as the user with
admin priviledges would be insufficient.

It is confusing, Admin is not Admin as it was in XP, its one of my
main annoyances with Vista, even "run as admin" does not always give
full access. This is all part of MSFTs attempt to address security
which is OK for novices but a total pain in the arse otherwise.

The following info shows how to set up a proper full admin accout to
log on to.

QUOTE

Log in as Full Administrator

1) Click the Start orb and click on Run (or press the Windows key + R)
2) Type in regedit and press OK. If it asks you to open this via UAP,
then
click Allow.
3) In the Registry Editor, navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.
4) In the right hand pane, right click the mouse and select New then
Key.
A new folder should appear in the left hand pane.
5) Name this new key SpecialAccounts and press Enter.
6) Right click the mouse on the new SpecialAccounts key in the left
hand
pane, select New then Key again to make a "sub-key".
7) Name this new key UserList and then press Enter. In this new
UserList
key, right click in the right hand pane and select New then DWORD
(32-bit)
and name this Administrator then press Enter.
8) Double click on the new DWORD you just made, and set the value to 1
then
press OK.

9. In the Run box type: control userpasswords2

10. Advanced -> Advanced (Local Users and Groups) -> Users

11. Doubleclick Administrator and uncheck "Account is disabled".

However nobody answered the question. The question is next. I have in logon
windows only one name. How I can make logon as administrator? Should i
create for administator password or create new account. Or to logon using F8
key? But in this case not all services work.

That is the administrator. But administrator does not mean running as you
did in XP. The administrator runs as a user but can grant permissions when
the system needs them. In Vista the system has to ask before making a
change to the computer.

Well doing the registry bit didnt do it. I actually didnt have a WinLogon key
so I had to create it. And in the end when I went cotrol userpasswords2
"Account id disabled" was allready unchecked.

Trying to Switch User is the same as before. No Administrator to choose
from. Its weird because this has been the only thing that I havent been
"allowed" to do. Must be something else besides a permissions thing. The
dialog thats coming up might not be that acurate.

I even went and "started" every service exept the few that wouldnt start but
that didnt help.

Diskeeper seems to not have a "community" but only have FAQs at their site.
And none of those links are working. They have some fairly expensive products
to not have any real support. Unfortunately thats how it seems to be alot of
the time in the computer industry. lol. The more it costs, the less help
youll get from them.

Maybe I should try Perfect Disk. Sounds like its a good product. I coulnt
find a version for Vista though. Are folks just using an XP version?

They do have some pretty good support. I don't know about a temporary
website problem, though.

You should be able to get in Diskeeper simply by doing one of a couple
things even before the regedits--I have some to add to Jonah's.

To get in Diskeeper do this:

1) Save the download as the .exe anywhere you like and then right click that
..exe and choose "Run as Admin" from the Right click context menu that pops
up.

2) Type in your Vista run box (Windows Key +R at same time):

"secpol.msc" and lose quotes>enter>local policies>securities options>3rd
item from last on menu>run all as admin>enable.

Do this for the purposes of getting whatever in including Diskeeper if you
need to after you try to right click the .exe of the download but you may
not want to keep this enabled. It's your call. The UAC team of course
wants it default disabled.

Good luck,

CH

Yeah so would we all, the filing system NTFS is supposedly slightly
changed and the policy is now to give the least required priviledges
to do any particular operation. Exactly how is hard work to figure out
but automatic tweaks, scripts and workarounds will surface sooner of
later. If you find a clear written explanation in English (not MSFT
English) please let me know. Meanwhile disable all the security (UAC)
also and add a proper admin account to gain full control. Assuming
this is a test box not a primary PC you will be OK.

Thanks Chad but run all as admin>enable didnt do it either. Realy bizarre. It
gets through the install ok. It just not allowing it to start the
DkService.exe. And once that fails it undoes the rest of the install.

Ive read alot about people getting this exact same error but that was a
while ago on XP machines. The way they resolved it was to make sure they had
the event log started but mine is started so thats not it. Oh well thanks a
bunch for the help guys. I give up. lol.

I hope you found the right entry at secpol. Also how about trying to
rightclick the .exe for Diskeeper and then click "run as admin"? You didn't
address whether you tried this and it always worked for me. I guarantee
that Diskeeper can be installed on that Vista box.

Additionally you can try these:

1) This is the reghack for being able to log on as admin: Go to:
HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
Add a new key: SpecialAccounts>And a sub-key in the SpecialAccounts key:
UserList>In the UserList key, create a DWORD (32-bit): Administrator Set
value to: 1

2) Go to Start/Run/ and there, enter control userpasswords2 - and enable it
there.

3) Go to Start/Run/ and there, enter compmgmt.msc - and enable it there.

4) Run "Net user administrator active:yes" from an elevated cmd prompt.

Good luck,

CH

Yea I mentioned that before. Right-clicking the
Diskeeper10_Professional_Vista_beta.exe and selecting run as administrator
didnt do it. And Ive even done the same thing with the setup.exe that is
unpacked from the Diskeeper10_Professional_Vista_beta.exe.

Doing the control userpasswords2 and compmgmt.msc didnt do it. In fact they
were both allready unchecked.

Run "Net user administrator active:yes" from an elevated cmd prompt didnt
work. But Im not that familiar with command promt stuff. Is elevated
different from the normal command promt? I typed in Net user administrator
active:yes and got:
System error 5 has occurred.
Access is denied.

Also Im pretty sure I found the right entry at secpol.msc. I enabled "Run
all administrators in admin approval mode"

I have Diskeeper over on XP. Just occured to me that maybe something is
looking at or pointing to it on C where XP is. Vista is on V and the install
path is on V but maybe something is still looking at C and some of the
Diskeeper components there. I renamed the Diskeeper folder on C and tried
again but no go. Frustrating!!! ( : Good thing Im on medication. lol.

1.. Log in using the account you created during the Windows Vista setup
process.
2.. From the Start menu, click All Programs and then expand Accessories.
3.. Right click on "Command Prompt" and click "Run as Administrator".
4.. Click on "Allow" from the Windows Security dialog.
You configured secpol correctly.

One solution for you: On a dual boot you can run either Diskeeper or
Perfect Disk from your XP boot and defrag the Vista drive. This works for
me with Perfect Disk.

I don't know why things are so refractory for installing Diskeeper given
what you've tried. Have you tried going to msconfig and simply turning off
UAC and restarting?
