How do I keep the document under the Home tab?

When I start a Word 2007 document, I want to remain in the Home tab.
Instead, the document flips to the General screen, and I have to repeatedly
go the Home tab if I want to change any of the items on it. What do I have
to do to prevent that?

Have you by chance minimized your ribbon, and that is what you are referring
to as the "general Screen". That is my first thought, otherwise one of the
tabs would be open, either Home, insert,Page Layout, referenences, mailings,
review or View.

If this is not the issue please post back with more details.

You can also double-click on any of the tabs to restore the Ribbon.

Are you by chance pressing Ctrl + F1 when this happens? This shortcut
toggles the ribbon on and off. You would need to click on the Home
tab or press Ctrl + F1 again.
