How do I keep formatting of previous version of word files

I have files that were created in Word 2000 & older that, when I open them in
Word 2003, looses its original format. What can I do to prevent this from
happening.

Hi,

Before opening the file please do these steps:

1. Open Mircosoft Word 2003
2. Click on File -> Open
3. Select "Files of type" like Word 2002
4. Select the File name which you would like to open
5. This will open the Document in the same format which you have earlier.
6. If it is prompting for any File to be installed, please use the Office
Install CD to install them.

In what way does the document lose its format? Are you opening on a
different computer? Running a different OS?

When I load a word 2002 file last edited on Windows 2000 or XP into word 2003
on XP I see a message in the lower left status line of "Word is formatting
the document:". Many things that are not headings in the original document
become headings, e.g., the document map shows captions as headings.

There is no choice of "word 2002" on the file open dialog as suggested in
the previous post so this doens't help.
