Word obviously doesn't believe you as you must be inserting a field for it
to update. You can toggle the field display (ALT+F9) and change the DATE (or
TIME) field to a CREATEDATE field. Dates are best inserted with a CREATEDATE
field in the template.

You must have this box unchecked when you insert the date using that dialog.
If you use Alt+Shift+D or the button on the Header and Footer toolbar to
insert a date, you will still get a DATE field. As Graham says, you need to
