How do I install a 3rd disk??

I have successfully installed a second disk, using the second connector on
the cable coming from my motherboard.

But how do I install a 3rd disk? Do I us an ATA card?

If you have installed the second hard disk on the primary IDE controller
with the first hard drive then you must connect the third drive to the
secondary IDE controller. This is granted that you have only one CD-Rom
connected to it. If you have two optical drive's connected then as you state
a IDE adapter card is needed.

Wherever it is you get the "3rd disk" be sure to get "the cable" with it (if
you bought a disk it came with a cable). Just plug the cable into the disk
and the unused IDE jack on your motherboard (end to end [middle jack is for
2nd drive on controller as your "second disk" on 1st controller is] &
respect any color coding per what you already have. Connect a power plug too
of course.
When you restart you may have to go into Disk Management to recognize or
format drive...

Modern motherboards have a primary and secondary connections that support 4
IDE drives. This can be hard drives or CD drives, etc. If you have two hard
drives and usually a CD drive, you can install one more IDE device without
additional hard ware cards. If you have two hard drives and two
CD/CDRW/DVD/DVDRW then you will need a RAID card to add additional hard
drive. Some motherboards come with built in RAID connections.

Or a USB2.0 HDD box.

If you have USB 2.0 you can get an external USB 2.0 hard drive. With USB
2.0 it will run about as fast as an internal drive. A little more expensive
but now you have removable/portable storage which offers more protection. I
have a 40GB USB 2.0 external drive that cost about $100 and I use it
primarily for backups.

Sure, you can buy an IDE controller card for as little as $20usd.
Promise makes good ones. Just be sure that whatever you buy is
compatible with XP. Read the System Requirements on the box.
