How do I insert picture in protected sheet

I am using XP Excel and want to be able to insert a picture into a "unlocked"
cell ( this is a block of merged cells to accomodate a picture) in a
"protected" worksheet. That option is not available (greyed out) in the
"insert" menu. I have tried using insert an "object" but that just locks up
the program.

Cells can only contain values and formulae, so you can't paste a picture
into a cell. Pictures exist on the drawing layer "on top of" the cell
layer.

AFAIK, you'll have to unprotect your worksheet in order to paste the
picture.
