How do I insert an "X" in a box?

I am filling out an application form that requires placing an "x" in a box. I
have tried to no avail. This can't be that hard. Help, please.
 
What have you tried to do? What happens when you press the spacebar?

The spacebar? That seems like a weird idea. Well, in desperation I tried it
and all it did was move the indented text to the right of the box over one
space. As to what I have tried to do....among other things...inserting a
symbol in it. Doesn't work. I need to clarify that this is Word 2007 I am
working with....on a Word document that was probably not created in Word
2007. When I click on the box I get 4 little blue balls...one in each corner.
Does that tell you something?
Thanks for any thoughts on this. It's for a grant application and I want it
to look good.
 
Sounds like the check box was created as an AutoShape, and you are meant to
print the form out and fill it in by hand.

The little balls suggest it is a graphic. You will not be able to check it.
Replace it with a checked box symbol or print it out and use a pen!
