how do i insert a file as an icon and not as the actual file inse.

i am have meeting notes created in word. i previously was able to insert
files as icons for reference. however, today, the actual file is inserted.
my actual scenario is attached/inserting an excel file as an icon but word is
displaying the actual excel file.

any help would be greatly appreciated.
 
Are you clicking "Insert | File" or "Insert | Object" to insert the Excel
file into Word? If you want to display the file as an icon, you should use
"Insert | Object", and check the "Display as icon" box.
