How do I get text in PowerPoint 2000 outline pane, not icons?

I am unable to get any text to appear in the outline pane. All that shows up
are small icons of slides. All the help screens say that the program
defaults to text, however, I haven't changed any defaults.
 
It sounds like you've not use the master to create text (but instead have
added your own text boxes to the slides. To see text in Outline view, enter
text on the slides where you see: "Click to add title," "Click to add text."
