How do I get rid .xls] in front of the tab name

I renamed a worksheet and it put .xls] in front of the new name. When I try
to delete the .xls], it gives me an error message and won't allow me to save
the new name. I'm trying to rename the tab from APRIL '06 to JUNE '06.

It sound like the workbook has some code to stop the worksheets being
renamed...I'd check it out with the owner of the workbook

I don't think this is a question of access to the worksheet. I have had this
same condition occur on Excel files I created myself.

I think there is some kind of bad data that Excel writes into the filename
along with the '.xls]' which the user did not put there. The user is not
able to delete this bad data, whatever it is, so Excel keeps complaining
about invalid characters no matter what the user tries to change the name to.

I have had some luck breaking out of this situation by hitting Esc key.

Check this thread:

"Prefix .xls] after renaming a sheet?" in Excel General Questions

The problem may be bracket characters in the filename.
