How do I get rid of a phantom page?

I have a document that I'm printing 2-sided. There is a blank page between
the first page and the backer of that page, but it doesn't show up unless you
are in print preview and it does print out. I have no idea where it came from
or how to get rid of it!

Either you or Word has inserted an Odd Page section break, the result of
which is a blank even page where required. If you didn't do this yourself,
then Word probably did it because you have led Word to believe you are
duplexing (by choosing mirror margins or "Different odd and even" headers)
and have started the next section with page 1 (or an odd number). Word knows
that odd pages are always verso, so it inserts an even page to keep the
pagination straight.

If pagination is not the issue, it may be that you have changed orientation.
Most printers don't like to print landscape in the first place, and they
especially don't like to be forced to print landscape on the back of
portrait or vice versa, so Word accommodates them by inserting a blank page.
You can sometimes change that by changing the section start type to "New
page" on the Layout tab of Page Setup.

Suzanne!
Thank you! I had my second page header (in page setup) as new page, I
changed to odd page and Voila! the phantom page is GONE! Thank you very much!

Sounds backward to me, but I'm glad you got it sorted.

windows xp 2002, I have a header and footer showing up on the page 2 that is
otherwise blank and not needed.

Did you turn on the non-printing characters as CyberTaz suggested?
