how do i get my space bar to stop typing periods

my microsoft word 2003 types peroids when i hit the space key i dont know
how to fix it
 
Check under the options >> View >>Formatting Marks.

There is one for spaces that when checked will display dots or periods on
your page.

Uncheck that to turn it off.
