How Do I Get My Java Capability Back?

R

Regina Litman

I'm running Internet Explorer 6.0 under Windows XP.

I downloaded the Java 1.4.2 Development Kit from Sun and installed it.
Because I left a certain option checked during installation, this
installed some type of Java over the default Java (probably from
Microsoft) that my IE 6.0 was using.

So, after I went to some pages that use Java, the Java stuff wouldn't
load at all. I remembered that I had this problem when I installed Java
1.4.1 about six months ago. What I did then was uninstall Java 1.4.1 and
put back in whatever Java Microsoft had supplied me (certain about the
first half of this past sentence, not so certain about the second half).
Then I reinstalled Java 1.4.1, making sure I unchecked the option that
caused me trouble. And my Java capabilities were back.

Tonight, I uninstalled Java 1.4.1, and I restarted the computer. But the
web pages that use Java are still not displaying the Java stuff. The
place where the Java needs to go has a Java coffee cup display in the
top right corner. I think I need to go fetch something from Microsoft
that displays Java properly in IE 6.0. Can someone please point me in
the correct direction? Thanks.

If this goes 24 hours without any response, can some MVP at least
respond that it was read but no answer was known? Thanks.

Just thought I'd let you know that I managed to figure this one out myself.

Tools | Internet Options | Advanced [tab] | Java (Sun) [category] -
unchecked "Use Java 2 v1.4.1_02 for <applet> (requires restart)"

Thanks for the help. As you may have seen, I figured it out myself, but
I appreciate your taking the time to answer.

I believe what you have pointed me to is a subset of what I downloaded
but which I didn't install to my satisfaction. There's something put out
called the Java SDK, which includes the Java Runtime Environment. The
Java SDK is what I need for various things I'm working on. What you sent
me to is the Runtime Environment only. This may benefit other users of
IE 6.0, but I need the SDK also (and I already have it).
