I posted a couple days ago about phantom programs that aren't there on a
drive that crashed.
i have done everything in system mechanic 6 to no avail.
name a good program for editing the registry.

TIA

To access the registry, go to Star - Run and type regedit then press
enter.

Saying that, be warned that making changes in the registry can cause the
system to become unbootable.

I would suggest you request guidance before making any changes in the
registry by explaining exactly what you are trying to achieve.

The whole story. I HAD 2 hardrives. F drive crashed. It is gone. I have
tried to reload MS active sync to the New C drive. The installer locks and
says to remove the old version on F drive. impossible. yes I have tried the
install remove. It says the F drive is not accessible. I tried the System
Mechanic. Every single feature. It does not remove the lingering referneces
to the programs on the F drive.
I just got an email from my isp since posting this Q and he uses FixIt
Utilities 6.0 for XP. Would this be a good route? As I said before all the
normal ways to install don't work

Here is the problem in the registry.
windows/windows CE Services/AppMgr/f:\program files
dusregard the wrong slashes. It still shows parts of programs on the dead
and gone F drive.
Just for the windows CE for handhelds there are about 20 refs to the F drive
that normal methods can't delete.

system mechanic should have cleaned up the orphans in the registry. maybe
the trial ware is limited or you didn't make to correct selections.

but in any case you this registry program from
http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm
it is super powerful and has the ability to destroy your system. But if you
use it the right way and don't use all of the extra features, it will be
your best computer friend, kindalikeme....

You can sort by colume one, make your selections and delete.
Then sort again by colume 2 and make your selections and delete.
You can right click on any entry that seems ambigious and all the files will
be listed and provide additional information about the software.

Basically all the tabs are helpful, but a couple may be a waste of time to
use. Incidently do not delete your unistall line items unless you know the
programs are no longer on your system. Otherwise, if you do delete any of
them, you will have difficult time in add/remove programs if you want to
uninstall anything in the future.

And only one menu item under tools>registrycleaner>orphans... is ok to use.
All the other ones can crash your system, not becuase they are defective,
but becuase they are powerful....

Afterwards, reboot for the registry to take affect. Before you do anything
above, create a restore point-for just in case.

For cleaning up a large number of registry references to a
non-existant drive you could use RegSeeker (free) from
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm

1. Make sure you create a manual System Restore point before running
RegSeeker.
2. Make sure you leave RegSeeker configured to make backups of
everything you it removes.

I used RegSeeker to resolve a similar problem. In my situation it
removed over 15,000 registry entries relating to a Visual Studio
install on a failed drive.

Good luck
