How do I get a computer w/o an admin password to join a workgroup???

My IT guy and I were trying to set up my laptop and desktop to see each
other over the cable network. He asked me to assign my desktop to a
workgroup (it was not assigned either to a workgroup or a domain
previously).

Well, once I did that and rebooted, windows no longer recognized my name and
password. It also didn't allow signing on as an administrator because I had
not previously assigned a password to the administrator.

We have looked all over and tried everything to get into the system so I can
log on to windows to no avail. Lynn (our IT guy) did the same thing on his
desktop at the office, but because it had been associated with a domain, it
recognized the administrator password we use on our machines and he was able
to restore his. That didn't help mine.

I was hoping you might have seen this problem before and have a way to get
back into windows when the password for administrator is unknown short of
reinstalling windows and reformatting the hard drive.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to resolve this without reinstalling?

Are you trying to map drives/share volumes from your
laptop at home on a cable modem to your desktop at work?

If this is the case, #1=bad idea, when you get the
configuration straightened out you will be vulnerable to
hacker attacks. #2=go with a VPN access. #3=your laptop
desires to log into a domain and verify your password, if
the network were not available you could log on with a
cached password. It is trying to log in as Administrator
on the Domain/workgroup that you have supplied (created).

Take a stroll over to www.wown.com. You should be able to
get enough advice and help doing what you want to do

Good luck

THanks

Sorry for hte delay - I was on vacation and actually it was for a friend and
I told him to take the computer to his company domain and let them set it up
to join the domain where the domain admin had the ability to resent the
admin pw. I think that is what has happened. It was a case of a user
trying to do something on their own without a good understanding of what
they were doing.

Appreciate the comments.
