How do I format phone numbers with periods

I've been typing phone numbers with periods instead of dashes...when I go to
format phone numbers on Excel spreadsheet it comes up - the number.

Any suggestions?
 
Save your workbook (just in case)
select the range of phone numbers
edit|replace
what: . (period)
with: (leave blank)
replace all

Now use format|cells|number tab
to apply your phone number format.
