How do I fix very slow e-mail download?

e-mail messages I am downloading are running VERY slowly. How can this be
fixed?

1) get a faster network connection?
2) don't scan incoming mail with an antivirus scanner
 
Thanks Brian.

I tried both suggestions before my original message. No improvement when I
retried. (Nothing has changed.)

Everything is fine except receiving messages, which are VERY slow.

Any other suggestions short of re-installing Outlook?
