How do I fill in a box that was created with the line feature?

I am attempting to create a 'stairwell' image by using the line feature in
PowerPoint 2003; however, I noticed that after the creation of all the lines
to complete the stairwell effect, even if grouped together to form (1) image
cannot be filled. Any suggestions? (no clip art ideas pls!)

Instead of the line shape, go to the Autoshapes menu and choose lines and
freeform (the one that looks like a closed shape). Hold done the shift key
to create straight lines. This shape will be fillable, but if you are not
careful, it won't fill the way you want.

The tool you need is NOT the line tool! Try the freeform tool in
Draw>Autoshapes>Lines to make a closed shape. You can edit the finished shape
by Right clicking > edit points (move or add points)
