How do I embed a link to a file?

I would like to be able to embed a link to a file on our server inside an
outlook message. Is this possible? I want to retain control of the file and
have others edit it but everytime I put a link in the form of either a
relative one (ie f:\directory\file.doc) or an absolute one
(\\server\directory\file.doc) it doesn't work.
 
Use the Insert button, then specify Hyperlink. Select type (other), and
you can specify a \\ server location. (Outlook 2003).
