How do I download a website copy without FP Extensions!

Greetings all
My problem is that I recently put a new computer together
and had backed up my website folder. Unknowingly I forgot
to backup using dates, hence I have a out of date backed
up website folder. So, from all I've researched lately, to
get an exact copy of my site back onto my computer I must
use Frontpages' "Open Web" command to do this so I get my
background theme, Link Bar, etc. Then I can "Publish web"
back to my hard drive.
When I try to do this "Open Web", Frontpage says the site
is not available, etc. I am supposed to get a window
asking for my name and password. This reason is, I think,
that Frontpage Server Extensions are not totally installed
on my host site. Is this correct and is there another way
to download my site with nothing missing. I tried FTP but
I don't get my theme or link bar showing up after opening
it in Frontpage.

Unless the extensions are installed on the host server and you can open the
remote directly in FP, it is not possible get the missing configuration,
since when you publish to a server without the extensions on the server,
there is not configuration info available.

In these cases the only option is to download the site using FTP, to a
folder, then open the folder in FP and publish to the correct location on
your HD, then re-build your navigation structure, re-apply your themes,
shared borders, etc.

The above is another limitation to consider when using themes, shared
borders, navigation component when publishing to a remote server that
doesn't have the extensions, you must keep good backups of your local web.

Oops, I forgot to also ask this. Since I have an older
backup available on my hard drive, can I use the hidden
folders (which contain the information I need I think?)
and copy these folders to the newly downloaded folder of
my current site. Then open Frontpage and have it use this
information for the linkbars, borders, etc.?

No, as the extensions are not required on the remote server unless using the
some of the new FP2002 options of the linkbar and shared border, but I
believe you would normally receive a warning when publishing, if that was
the case.

That may or may not work, since of you import a local web into another web,
FP will exclude that info.

Hi Thomas
Well, thanks to your suggestion I have been successful
so far. I downloaded my files by FTP, then opened my old
version in Frontpage, then imported my new downloaded
files into my old site. Then I had to add the new pages to
the navigation to get the link bar to show on those pages
and that was basically it. Thanks again for your help.
