How do I display the row number

I have to reate a formula in Cell E8 that will search cells A18 thru A32
looking for the date on 09/16/2006. When it finds it I need to display the
row number in cell E8.

I am new to excel and I have tried MATCH and VLOOKUP but get an #NA error
with both.
HELP PLEASE!!
