How do I disable the auto driver search! It causing problems

Although I continuely use the same USB Key, Windows XP doesn't remember the
device, and triggers and driver search and load dialogue. This also occurs
with a hot pluggable SATA harddrive I have. I want Windows XP to remember the
device or just ignore it. How can I setup Windows XP to do ignore or
remember? Why doesn't it remember my USB Key?

For the SATA hard drive, it doesn't find the driver. The dialogue only give
me a "Finish" button with no check box to ignore device in the future.

Don't know why your devices aren't remembered but the setting is:

Control Panel : System : Hardware : Drivers : Windows Update :
"Never search Windows Update for drivers"

Oops! I totally misread the "disable the auto driver search" as
meaning searching for drivers out on internet. Sorry about that.
It won't stop them from the redetection cycle you describe.
Possibly try uninstalling the device, perhaps even in safemode,
and WinXP may redetect-and-install in a correct way .. but you've
probably tested that already.
