help to disable feature

When I open a document in Word 2002, There is a long
delay and I see the words "requesting virus scan" on the
bottome of the screen. This didn't happen until I updated
Word and Office from the MS site. Also, I have anti-virus
software and don't need Word to do its own scan.

How do I disable this virus scan feature? I've already
set the Macro security to low. That doesn't help.

Word has no virus scanner. The message is coming from your AV software -
probably Norton AV? Disable the office plug-in.

I have exactly the same problem. I have Windows XP. The problem started today, 01/08/04. I had Norton scan all of the computer and it showed no problems. Help!!

graham's solution worked

Graham's solution worked. Disabling the Office plug-in
from Norton AV and then restarting solved everything.
Thanks.

Graham's solution worked for me too - Thanks! My question now is, that with the NAV disabled for Office, did we lose AV protections for Office? I also sent a note last night to Norton describing this situation and asked them to take a look at it and resolve it. Bob

It does nothing useful and will not restrict virus protection. It is also a
lot more sensible than Norton's suggested fix:

--
Norton has forgotten to update its Verisign certificate which ran out on the
7th January.
Norton has posted a silly suggested fix at
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...nsf&view=docid&dtype=&prod=&ver=&osv=&osv_lvl
A better plan, which will not compromise security, would be to disable the
NAV Office Plug-in. You do so via Norton AV > options > miscellaneous.

I used to have Norton, but uninstalled it and Word still looks for the AV software that isn't there, ergo it can't pass the document back to Word, and it won't open any documents. Same for Excel. I've tried to reinstall Office but it hasn't worked. Any suggestions?
