You can't remove it. If your PC BIOS is ACPI compliant, the
installation program will install an ACPI HAL which means that standby
will be an option on the shutdown screen. In order to remove the
standby option you would have to switch to the standard PC HAL. In
order to do that you would have to do a repair install of XP and
selectively choose standard PC during the install process.
My objection to standby is that I have a cable modem and if the PC is put on
standby connectivity is lost with no way I can find to restore it. It's
happened twice now and I had to resort to having Charter Communications come
out to get me connected again. My other PC has ME and it never loses
connectivity. I just don't want to run the risk of someone putting it on
standby again.
