I am using Outlook 2007 and I have duplicated email contacts that are in send
and receive, but do not appear as email accounts. Consequently I am receiving
multiple messages that are all the same.

If you have an account listed multiple times in Send/Recieve, you're going
to get mail from that account multiple times, since you're basically telling
it to do that.

You're sure that this pop/imap account is only listed once under Tools -
Account Settings?

Hit send too soon. You should be able to go to Control-Alt-S to configure
the send/receive settings.
