I just installed a new hard drive. Originally I cloned the old drive to the
new one and then used my emergency repair disk to get it going. It worked
OK, but then I decided that there's nothing like a fresh installation.
So, I installed W2K from scratch, but of course, I forgot to take out the
old installation. Now when I start the computer it gives me a choice of the
2 W2Ks. I know how to stop the display, but I figure that other installation
is probably taking up quite a bit of disk space. My question is, how to
delete the old installation? Which directory is it likely to be in?

I have a similar question ... I have dualboot Windows 98 /
2000 and wish to remove the 98. What is the best way to go
about that?

Thank you!

Edit boot.ini file in your primary hard disk using notepad. ( you will need
to enable viewing of hidden / system files by going to tools > folder
options under my computer) .
mine looks like this -

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect

In your case, you will see a second line under [operating systems] . Delete
the unwanted line , save the file and reboot. you should now not see this
option.

**CAUTION** do this if u are 100 % sure u are deleting the unwanted
installation. If you delete the wrong line, you might NOT be able to BOOT
AGAIN***!!!!***

Hmm, now there's a bit of luck for me. The wrong question answered, but the
right information :-)

I can stop the boot screen from coming up by right clicking on My Computer,
go to Properties / Advanced / Startup and Recovery, then disable the list.
Then again, if I go to boot.ini I can change Timeout=30, to 0.
But, the real info I needed to actually delete the old W2K installation is
right there were you said it would be. Mine looks like this:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows 2000
Professional" /fastdetect
C:\=MS-DOS

That tells me that my old intallation is in the WINDOWS directory. It's
almost 2GB in size, so I can delete it. Before I do, I'll be sure to try
renaming it 1st to make sure there are no ill effects.
Thanks for the help.
