How do I create shades around text that doesn't print?

I'm creating a template in Word. I've inserted fields for users to insert
data, but I'd like it to stand out using shades of color. Is there a way to
use these shades without having them print when the template is used?

Word offers gray shading for form fields, and nothing else. If you apply
background shading in another color, the only way to prevent it from printing is
to write a macro that removes the shading, sends the document to the printer,
and then restores the shading. It's possible, but hardly worth the effort.
