Here is the root of the question. I have created a new shape and I would like
to save it as an autoshape. I am currently using Office 2000. Thanks

As Austin explained, you can't really create your own autoshapes.

But you can save your shape in the clip gallery so you can get to it easily
in future. To do this in PPT 2000 (glad you included your version of PPT --
it's important in this question!), do the following:

Open PPT and go to Insert/Picture/Clipart. Click on the category where you
want to save your autoshape (or create a new category if you want). Make
sure you're on the Pictures tab in whatever category it is you'll be working
with.

Go to the slide where your object is and select it. The clipart dialog box
will minimize to your taskbar. Drag your object over the "insert clipart"
dialog name on your taskbar and hold your mouse there until the clipart
dialog opens up. Once it opens, move your mouse around until the pointer
changes to an arrow with a small rectangle. Then let go of your mouse
button. You'll have the opportunity to add a description and keywords and
select categories, etc., for your shape.

Now you can just use Insert/Picture/Clipart when you want to use the shape.
It won't act like the other autoshapes with the yellow resize handle things,
though.
