In the insert shapes tab every shape has a name: Viz oval, rectangle,
freeform etc. When we animate the name is exhibited in the animation pane.

I came across a ppt file with animation pane indicating the name as "
autoshape". The shape resembles an oval. When would such a name be shown by
ppt.

Was the file created in an earlier version of PowerPoint? I think the
default naming conventions might have changed in 2007.

As well as what David says, in 2007 you can name any shape in the selection
pane to anything you like and this name will appear in the animation pane.
