How do I create a hyperlink from a file path?

I am trying to create a usable link from a file path. I have tried adding
file:\\ to the beginning and adding %20 in the blanks. I am doing exactly
what I was taught and still no usable link. My coworker does the same from
his PC and it works...why does it work for him but not me???

Select the file path and press Ctrl+K or Insert | Hyperlink. If you are
wanting this to happen automatically when you type the file path, check the
box for "Internet and network paths with hyperlinks" on the AutoFormat As
You Type tab of Tools | AutoCorrect Options.

What version of Word are you using?

What are the steps you're following?

Is the link changing at some point?

Can you show a sample of the path you're wanting to link?

What is your setting for link updating in
Tools=>Options=>General=>Web Options?
