How do I create a combined character like an x with a line over i.

Very simply, I need to create a mathematical formula in which the main
variable is a lowercase x with a line over it. This is not a common symbol,
and I can't figure out how to create a diacritic like that. On a typewriter,
I'd just backspace and add the second character....does anyone else here
remember the typewriter?
