i would like to be able to copy to a cd-rw and then take it away and be abke
to change the details on it and save it rather than it just becoming read only

This is working for me. I can open the .mdb directly from the CD-RW on
another computer and save changes.

Are you sure you're using an CD-RW and not a CR-R?
What software are you using to copy the .mbd?

I assume you know that the CR-RW has to be either formatted in a way as to
be readable on other PC's. You can also use "Drag-to-Disk" with Roxio or
similar software. It's also possible that the destination drive is just not
compatiable with the drive that wrote the disk (usually not a problem with
newer drives).

Have you been able to write other types of files to a CD-RW and read and
modify the files on the destination computer?

This is not a problem with Access. Instead this is likely a hardware
problem, or a CD-writing software problem.

This will work with a CD-R. Have been doing it for ages - but there are
(at least) a couple of qualifications.
a. The destination machine must have a CD-RW drive with appropriate
software or you have to burn the disk in an appropriate format.
b. CD-Rs and CD-RWs handle save/replace differently. CD-RWs act much as
any other disk and replace files without loss of disk space. CD-Rs, on the
other hand lose some disk space every time a file is saved/replaced. This
can eat up disk space in a hurry.

Usually, when you create a disk you can specify how it is written, that is,
leave it readable/writeable in other CD-RW drives, readable in most CD
drives or readable if software (UDF?) is installed. If you want to use the
file in a drive that is not CD-RW compatible, you have to select one of the
last two options. Then you need to copy the file over to the harddrive of
the machine you want use it on. You will need to manually change the
properties of the file from read only.

For instance, my lappie is a little old and does not have a CD-RW. So, to
edit my mdb's on the laptop I have to burn them to a disk using the "read
all" option. Then I copy to my lappies HDD, de-select 'read only' in the
properties. Then, after changes, I transfer them over my home LAN to a box
that has a CD-RW and burn the files or transfer them to the work LAN.

IIRC when you burn to a CD it will always set the read only attribute and
you have to find work-arounds.

And, yeah. It is not an Access problem. Just the way CD-RWs and related
software works!
