how do i contact microsoft with a suggestion

Don’t know if anyone high up at Microsoft will ever reads this but here is my
suggestion and a little ranting too - sorry:

Why won’t the smartest man in the world, put all ones data files in my
documents sub folders?

I just had to change out a failing hard drive. I use Dantz retrospect
backup software because it was highly recommended and I found out the backup
software in Windows can not restore with out a floppy which I do not have.

Let me tell you, this Retrospect back up – restore software is “not for
kids.†I am not an IT guy but I am fairly good with computers and I ended up
calling Dell and Retrospect multiple times over a two day excursion to
computer hell and back. Again, formatting and reinstalling is not for mire
amateurs.

Now think about this: why not put both .pst files in my docs. Then put the
custom dictionary and the auto correct files in my docs too. Then we would
all know where they are.

Do you know that my two .pst files are in different place on my machine by
default? And, they are in different places on two Dell computer bought in the
same year! Then I think they are hidden files too. Going to help in outlook
is absolutely no help in locating these files. Thank goodness for Google – I
type in a question there and learned of the right click on personals folder
and then go to advanced and one can find the path for where Microsoft buried
the .pst file. And trust me folks, when I say buried it is buried way down
deep and in an obscure place. It is almost like they do not want you to find
it.

On top of all this – the back up command is not shipped or installed out of
the box in the outlook program. You have to go online get the backup command
download and run it to be able to back up outlook’s pst files. and I am not
even sure it backs up both pst files?

And get this – do a windows explore search and it does not find the pst
files! and, this is even better – turn on and off all the check boxes –
three different ones – so you can see all the hidden and system files on your
machine and windows explorer still can not locate any .pst files.

Seriously folks, the smartest man in the world tells us to always do backups
and does not let us do a backup or a copy of our data.

Then as if this is all not bad enough, the smartest man in the world put the
“favorites†folder somewhere else too. I never have found this folder as the
only way to back it up, according to all the info I can find in help and on
google is to do an export. YOU CAN NOT EVEN COPY THIS FOLDER CAUSE IT CAN
NOT BE FOUND.

Now think about this: If all my data files, including office stuff, outlook
pst, custom dictionary, auto correct and my favorites were in one
place/folder with sub folders I could do an explorer file copy to another
drive and go home each night. Then I could do a backup once in while for my
drivers, ini s and my register ect.

I dare ya to go and read the Retrostpect backup software manual and try to
understand what how it creates these catalog files and backup sets and
partials and other IT jargon crap. There is no way a simpleton like me can
understand it to be sure I am backing up my files correctly. So, I just want
to copy my precious data files and be done with it.

Storage is cheap so we added a 400 gig HD to our main home computer and now
just do copies of our my docs and pst files from our laptops and other
computer to that monster drive on the main computer at night on our little
home network at night. Then, once in a while we delete the oldest copies and
start over. At least this way I am sure my docs, EM's and pictures are safe.

As long as I am ranting here is another amazing one from the smartest man in
the world:

the backup software that comes with Microsoft Windows XP professional will
back up your files. BUT, one can not reinstall them with out creating a
floppy disk recovery disk. So I was backing up using this Microsoft program
for a year and then found out when I went to restore that I needed a floppy
disk recovery thing.

Ok find – tell the backup program to make this floppy – BUT I HAVE A PROBLEM
– I have no floppy drive on the laptop and one can not make this file onto a
CD. So I posted a question about this here and a guy said yup, there is no
way to work around this problem so go and buy some other software to back up!
Apparently the Microsoft windows backup program goes back to NT and has
never been updated by the smartest man in the world to work with computers
that do not have a floppy. All I can say is wow.

I would consult for free to Microsoft and Retrospect – just to get all this
stuff straightened out so the “average†computer Joe six pack guy could run
their computer in a truly safe manner. This consulting would be real simple:
put all my data files that change in sud folders under my documents. Next
put two button on “start†that say backup and restore – I would build this
right into Windows.

This way I could do my file copies in a simple manner. And, I could backup
with one click and a few option choices in a wizard. And, if I had to
rebuild do to whatever I could reinstall windows xp on the new drive and then
hit the restore button on “start†and boom, everything would be back to
normal with all my drivers and such.

Gosh this is simple. Microsoft needs some Joe six packs like me working
there? !

If anyone smart has read all this – who do I send this too at Microsoft?

Almost all of your statement are just from not knowing where to look.
And yes you can restore without a floppy.
All you stuff is in C:\Documents and Settings\(YOUR NAME)

This is the first time I've ever heard ANYONE refer to Bill Gates (my
assumption) as the 'smartest man in the world'.

Here's a tissue........
