How do I combilne partitions?

R

RScotti

Hi,
I have a new computer with a problem so will have to do a clean install.
The factory put a partition of 15 GB for a backup ( but since my Windows is already 28 GB it is too small) which is on
the LEFT side of my C:\ drive I can't combine it to my C:\ I can only shrink my C: and create a partition on the RIGHT
side.
This 15 GB backup is on the left of my C:\ drive and I would like to combine it with C:\ but I can't expand my C:\ drive
to pickup the partition.
I deleted the Volume on that drive but the unallocated space is still there and can't combine it with C:\

If possible I would like to do all this before the clean install and create a new partition of 250 GB on the right side
of C:\ for backups.
Can some one please tell me how to do this?

Hi,

You can either delete C: and recreate it to the preferred size as part of
setup, or you can use a third party partitioning utility to slide it into
the free space so that the free space is at the end of the volume where you
can expand into it. Disk Manager doesn't include the capability to move or
slide an existing volume, and expanding can only be done from the end of it.
BootIT NG from terabyteunlimited.com is one utility that you can do this
with.

Do **NOT** screw around with that partition as it is likely the factory
restore partition. If you change it in any way you may lose the ability to
bring your computer back to "out of box" condition.

I did already deleted it but it is still there as unallocated space. Systemax told me I only had to leave the 1.5 GB
partition that they say Windows created for the Recovery & Complete PC Backup programs. If I just even right click on
the 1.5 partition. All I get is a help option.

They also said that they had another partition which I deleted that they used to install the Vista from some kind of
Internet connection with MS. But they said I didn't need that either so I deleted that and now it is combined with the
15 GB partition.

PS.
They also said that empty 15 GB was for a PC Backup and was called that in the name of the drive.

Is this option in the Windows setup or do I have to go to the recovery tools on the DVD?
If so How do I do the merge partitions.

Hi,

It's in Windows setup where you choose the install location. Just use the
advanced tools to delete the existing partitions and then create the new
one.

Thanks. I think that is the best way to do this if I can't fix the problem.

PSS: Richard,
There is another partition that they told me not to delete it is called MELISSA Configuration. They said not to delete
that.
That's probably the one you mean as to not to touch?

I don't see that this is used for Visa only NTFS Windows XP.
I don't want any compatibility problems.

Hi,

Works fine with Vista's NTFS, I've used it myself.

Hi Rick,
I just tried to resize my C:\ partition with this program but it says I am already at the max size even though the 15 GB
unallocated partition is just to the left of this.
Any ideas?

I don't know, in the Computer Manage it just says "Unallocated". Looked in properties but couldn't find anything either.
It is not listed in the top where the other three are. there is C,670 GB, D,245 GB and a EISA configuration of 1.5 GB I
think that is for the recovery programs.
When I was at the boot It program it said 15485 MB "Free Space"
I also didn't install that EMBR program what ever it was that uses more than 4 primary partitions.

You can only grow the partition to the right. One of the reasons that I use
Acronis Disk Director from the boot CD. There are almost no constraints on
what you can do.

If I remember right I could do the with Partition Magic but it hasn't had a version for Vista yet.
Are you saying I can do this with your program?

How large are these drives ? (C drive is 670GB ?)

Start/run/diskmgmt.msc
Look at the graphic for your drive.
Is the unallocated space adjacent to your C drive

R

Richard Urban

Yep! Acronis Disk Director 10.0.2160 will do it. Get it from
www.acronis.com. Make sure you register after you install it. You can't get
any upgrades unless you do.

C is 670.75 GB D is 244 GB The unallocated free space is 15 GB
That is next to the C: on the left side.
