How do I change the "File type" back to the defaul?

Frank Martin

For some reason, all my *.jpg files have the name "Omnipage Image Document"
in the 'File Type' column of Windows explorer.

How can I change this column back to "Jpg type"?.

Please help, Frank

Hi,

Open the Omnipage software, check its options to see if it has one that
makes it the default program for .jpg's. If so, undo it.

Thanks I have tried this to no avail.
Is there something in the registry I can fix?

The problem with that fix is that there is a setting in the Omnipage
software that is overriding it. Until you undo it, it will continue to
resist any other attempts to change the default association.

Thanks for pointing that out. I should have known it wasn't going
to be that easy.

I tried this too, but seems to be no way to do this. I tried removing the
software (OmniPageSE - an ocr scanner) and reinstalling, but everything
remains the same.

EUREKA! this worked. I went to the site and downloaded the JPG/JPEG program
and then did as it said.

It has fixed them all. Very many thanks...........!

Hi Frank,

Check deep in the options/preferences of the program. Doug'd fix will likely
work (he's pretty good with this stuff), but it may be temporary and not
last beyond the next boot if Omnipage usurps the file association.

I had the same problem after loading all the software for my Canon
MP500 all-in-one, which included Omnipage SE as its scanner handler. I
downloaded and ran the jpg file association registry fix below with no
apparent change, at least in my Windows Explorer listings.

I went to Tools in Windows Explorer then Folder Options, File Types
tab. I paged down to GIF, which was also associated with Omnipage
Image Document, selected and deleted it. Then I clicked on the New
button, entered GIF and hit Okay. Suddenly, all my GIF's and JPG's are
listed properly in both Explorer and File Types again as GIF File or
JPEG Image, and they open with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as
desired.

I did not have to delete or recreate the .jpg, .jpeg or .jpe types.
Since I didn't run the registry fix for .gif files, I'm guessing that
the default may have taken over when I removed the Omnipage file type.
I did not have to uninstall the scanner software.

The down side of this is that now the Search function in Omnipage will
not automatically find all the image files on my hard drive, but I
didn't need it to do that for me anyway. If I try to open a file in
Omnipage, I have to tell it to look for all files instead of just .opd,
but that's not a problem. I am still experimenting with the scan wizard
to see if anything is irretrievably broken in that, but there's been
nothing so far.

I'm sure this discussion will come up on searches since Canon is
bundling this software, so I hope this helps! By the way, I checked
all over the Omnipage software, and there are no options for changing
file type. The software install itself obnoxiously does not give you a
choice and depends on the change for several functions.

You can also right click on an existing .jpg file, chose Properties and
click on Change. Then pick the application as the default application.
