How do I change my document from codes to words?

I have re opened a word document to find that I can only read it in codes?
It's a really important document and I need it be to restored back into
words! I don't understand how it has happened as I saved it lots????

You do not tell which types of codes you see. The only problem may be that
you have turned on _field_ codes. In that case, you only need to press Alt+F9
to toggle field codes so that you see field results instead of field codes.

Note that Alt+F9 turns on and off the “Field codes†option in Tools >
Options > View tab. You can also toggle the field codes by right-clicking in
any field and selecting “Toggle Field Codes†from the pop-up menu.

sorry I did not specify which codes these were. I opened up my document to
find a box appeared asking to "select the encoding whick makes the document
readable" It then specifies three options "windows (default), MS-DOS,Other
encoding"Ive tried all three options they are all in these box codes!

Ive tried your suggestion and it doesnt seem to be working?Is there anything

I don't think I am able to tell you what to do. I hope somebody else will
return with the help you need (if you search Google for similar problems, you
will see that there are different suggestions - I am not sure what will work
for you).

Thank you for all of your help Ive tried both the open and repair and
recovering text from any file but its still not fixed. Ed's suggestion was
significant because the name of the file is the same as the original file
name except the first two letters are replaced by "~$". As I saved it so many
times will it not be somewhere on my computer beacause it surely can't hav
wiped it completley off can it?

Ive eventually retrieved the file it was in my recent documents even thought
it was not in the my documents folder so i hav retireved it. Thank you for
all of your suggestion there were greatly appreciated!

If you opened the file that begins with ~$, you were not opening the
document at all. That is the "owner" file that keeps anyone else from
opening your document for editing while you have it open. See the section on
"owner files" in “Description of how Word creates temporary files†at

I'm glad you got it sorted. Note that you can perform a search for files
that you cannot find in Windows. Just hold the Windows key and press F,
to display the find dialog box.
