how do i change 20050614 within in a cell to a recognised date

the nomber is a download from a server, it's a date backwards i need it to
read as a normal date for a look up

Hi Richard

try highlighting the column then
Data>text to columns>hit next until you reach the end and select the Date
option to read YMD
