How do I cancel sending a read receipt request?

I am unable to send outgoing mail in Outlook, as the network I am on will not
allow it. However, someone who mailed me requested a read receipt and I
clicked Yes to send one. Now everytime I perform a Send/Receive it comes up
with a Send error - and there is nothing to be deleted in the Outbox. I can
only assume it is the reply to the read receipt which I am trying to send.
Any idea how to stop it? (I have already tried deleting the account from
Outlook, which fixed the problem, but upon re-instating it, the Send error
just comes back.)
