I have a web site which was designed with FrontPage 2003. It has grown
rather large, to about 6500 files. I am using extensively the front page
navigation structure, and shared borders. Now I'm getting parsing errors, or
server timeout errors, whenever I am trying to publish it.

What can I do to manage my web site more effectively?
Thanks in advance,
Jürgen Braungardt.

Break it down into sub webs.

I have a site with many more files than that, but I do not get errors. I do
not use the FP navigation structure. I use the folder list the same as
Windows Explorer. I may be wrong, but as far as I can tell, the FP
navigation structure is meant for small sites.

In my opinion, shared borders and stuff like that just complicates things.

Consider switching from shared borders to Dynamic Web Templates (DWT).

A DWT provides the functionality of shared borders with a lot more
flexibility. Pages built with DWTs are not rebuilt on the server as
are those with shared borders, so server timeouts are considerably
reduced (but perhaps not totally eliminated).

There is one caveat: change the DWT and every page using the DWT will
have to be re-published - but how often do you change your shared
borders (adding and removing pages from the FP Navigation does not
count as changing the DWT.)

Using Tom's suggestion to split the site into subwebs in conjunction
with DWTs will be the best solution.
